Washington Tourist Attractions

The Shaw neighborhood in Washington DC has historically deep African American ties. It is full of some of the District’s popular concert venues, restaurants, and indie boutiques. It is also home one of the most happening bar scenes in DC. Below are five of the best things to do when in Shaw as part of your Washington DC tour.

Watch a Show at the Howard Theatre

Bigwigs from the realm of music, including Marvin Gaye and Ella Fitzgerald, have performed at this venue during the 20th Century’s first half. The two-floor concert venue, which was restored back in 2007, now plays host to performances in various genre of music, be it rock, blues, or jazz.

Visit the Statue of Duke Ellington

The Duke Ellington statue resides just outside the Howard Theatre. He was born in the Washington DC area, once performed in the theater, and rightly, the statue sits adjacent to a treble clef that is symbolic of the Duke’s contribution to DC’s music scene and culture.

Pay a Memorial Visit to the African American Civil War Locations

The African American Civil War Memorial pays tribute to the soldiers who fought in the Civil War. At a corner of the Vermont Avenue, you can see a large wartime memorial statue, and walls that list out the names of soldiers who fought for the Union. The Vermont Avenue is also home to the namesake museum, which houses related uniforms, photographs, and letters.

Shop Out for Fashion Items

Recent developments adjacent to the U Street and 8th Street have brought retailers, both national and local, to glassy buildings such as the Atlantic Plumbing Building and the Shay. Head over to Steven Alan if you want women’s and men’s clothing, Lettie Gooch for fashion wears for women, and Read Wall for suits, ties and shirts for men.

Watch a Film at the Atlantic Plumbing Cinema

Glamorous décor, stadium seats, and an array of independent films keep this cinema hall full of audiences. The onsite bar serves up wine, cocktails, and snacks; you can have refreshments from there itself or take them into the cinema hall. Check out for a roster of Now Running movies prior to making the trip to one of Shaw’s best entertainment venues.
